In September 2000, 189 Heads of Nations came together to commit to work together to build a safer, more
prosperous and equitable world for all by 2015 at the United Nations Millennium Summit, which gave birth
to the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In 2007, in an extraordinary initiative called Stand Up
and Speak Out, assisted by governments and NGOs all over the world, a staggering 43.7 million people
spread over 127 countries stood up within 24 hours and took an oath to end poverty. In 2008, the campaign
is called Stand Up and Take Action.

What action do we take?
One of the MDGs is to “ensure environmental sustainability”. Global warming is no longer “somebody else's”
problem. It has not just touched us, but has left deep scars in the form of natural calamities worldwide viz.
tsunamis, cyclones and disturbing climatic changes. A very easy and effective way to contain global
warmingis to plant trees. Mission Green Earth is a commitment to plant 100 million trees and have a 100
million people stand up and take the oath on October 17, 18 or 19, 2008.

How does my organisation become a part of this?

• Between today and October 16, 2008, people from your organisation collectively need to initiate a tree plantation campaign. [Take action]
• On October 17, 18 or 19, 2008 more than 500 people need to assemble and take the oath. [Stand Up]
• Both these events need to be documented with photographs and reported.
• Institutions that successfully complete both these activities will be awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the United Nations.

TARGET

• 10 Crore is the National Goal.
• Target for NCR is 5 Lacs.
• 10,008 in each sector
• 1008 in each sub-centre .
• 25 onward in each Society / School / College/ Institute
• 5 onward in each family
• Balance in Green-belt, Park or road-side
